Forecast Discussion

Canadian high pressure is centered over the Great Lakes today. High clouds filter sunlight and temperatures are around 8 degrees cooler than average. Winds could get gusty at higher elevations.

Tropical Storm Ian leaves central Florida today and continues north over the Atlantic before making another landfall in the Charleston area tomorrow afternoon.

For us in the Southern Appalachians tomorrow, clouds thicken and winds pick up as Ian approaches. Rain begins in the afternoon and turns heavy Friday night. We'll experience high winds through Saturday morning as the core crosses into western North Carolina.

Ian breaks up on Saturday but moisture sticks around allowing showers to continue Sunday and linger into Monday. Rainfall totals are expected to be around 3"-6" inches in most places but areas along the Blue Ridge escarpment could see more. Despite dry conditions over the last few weeks, there is still flooding and landslide risk.

Clouds decrease Tuesday as temperatures warm up into a more pleasant Wednesday.
