Are you over the age of 60 and dealing with a chronic disease, such as asthma, diabetes, COPD, heart disease, arthritis, or fibromyalgia? If so, the Living Healthy program may be your answer for a better quality of life. The Living Healthy Program is a six week education group designed to help people like you learn how to live a healthier life with a chronic condition.

Do you know someone who is on Medicare and needs assistance in paying for their prescription drugs? Medicare beneficiaries may be eligible for the federal Extra Help low income subsidy program if he/she has limited income and resources.
HIDEThe Extra Help program can increase cost savings by paying for all or part of the monthly premiums, annual deductibles and provide lower prescription co-payments under a Medicare prescription drug plan. To qualify for Extra Help, the monthly income must be limited to $1,361.25 for an individual ($1,838.75 for a married couple living together). Additionally, the total resources must be limited to $12,640 for an individual ($25,260 for a married couple living together). The resources do not include a primary residence or a vehicle. If you believe someone you know may qualify for the Extra Help program, please encourage them to apply on-line at www.socialsecurity.gov, or contact the Watauga County Project on Aging at 828-265-8090 and we may assist them with completing the on-line application process or send them a paper application.

HIDE Dog Obedience Class with Vanessa Van Valin
Local dog trainer, Vanessa Van Valin, of Dog’s Best Friend Training, will be teaching a Dog Obedience Class using the clicker training technique on Thursday evenings February 16th, 23rd, March 1st, 8th and 15th from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. Cost of class is $150.00. Classes will be held in the Watauga Humane Society’s Community Room, and a portion of the proceeds benefits the animals at the Watauga Humane Society.
HIDERequirements for the classes are rabies vaccination and 5-way vaccination, a 5-foot leash, a clicker, and dog treats. Puppies must be at least 4 months old and have all shots completed. Plan to bring documentation and arrive at 5:00pm on February 16th for registration. No aggressive dogs will be allowed, at trainer's discretion.
Vanessa Van Valin has been a dog trainer for over 15 years, and is experienced in dog obedience, problem solving, tricks, agility, and search and rescue training.

The 2012 Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program is now accepting applications. Classes will meet weekly from 1 - 4:30pm beginning on Wednesday, March 7 and continuing through May. The AARP Tax-Aide Program, in cooperation with the IRS and N.C. Dept. of Revenue, will again offer free tax preparation for seniors, as well as low and middle income taxpayers.
HIDEElectronic filing (E-file) is available for safe and accurate preparation and fast refunds. To be eligible, you should not have any of the following types of income: rental, partnership, business requiring Schedule C, royalties, and sale of home or business. If your tax return is relatively complex you will be advised to seek professional tax assistance. Federal and NC returns will be filed, but no out of state returns will be completed. The Tax-Aide Program will run from February 7 to April 17, 2012. Counselors will be at the Lois E. Harrill Center on Tuesdays and at the Western Watauga Community Center in Cove Creek on Mondays. The 2012 A Cool 5 Race Weekend will be held June 8th and 9th, 2012 on Beech Mountain, NC. Events include a pre-race pasta dinner hosted at the Buckeye Recreation Center with live music, games and activities, and a guest motivational speaker (to be announced). Pre-race packet pick-up will be available for race day participants at the Buckeye Recreation Center during the pasta dinner festivities.
Saturday consists of the 5 mile race, pet-friendly (complete with doggy water stops), 1.5 mile fun run and walk, race expo, kids fun village with bounce house, complementary beer, and post-race meal and awards presentation with live music and games for the family.
