Who & What Is Camp Broadstone?

Camp Broadstone is Appalachian State University's year round outdoor adventure and environmental education center. The camp serves groups from a variety of economic, social, racial, and intellectual backgrounds. Camp Broadstone uses unusual classrooms; a high ropes course, the Alpine Tower, a climbing wall and a group problem solving course to teach our students practical living skills, to help them learn more about themselves, and to learn more about their relationships with other people.

Camp Broadstone is located on 55 acres of woods and meadows in the small community of Valle Crucis, six miles west of Boone and the campus of Appalachian State University. Our facilities include a main lodge and dining hall, four winterized cabins that can accommodate up to 88 people, classroom cabins, and adventure programming elements located on the property.

Fall Adventure Program

WHO ARE OUR FALL GROUPS?

Our fall groups are mainly 5th and 6th graders from public and private schools. One class at a time consisting of 15-39 children, their teacher, and a couple adult chaperones stay at camp for three days. During that time they participate in our adventure activities and/or environmental education classes. Their entire stay places the students in many community situations ...cabin living, meal time, activities where they are exposed to team building, goal setting, supporting classmates as they try new things, and developing self confidence.

Group Training

WHAT IS STAFF TRAINING?

Camp Broadstone's staff training is open to all students from all majors. Working at Camp Broadstone will give you the opportunity to learn, practice, and perfect job skills in the areas of communication, leadership, time management, group development and management, decision making, and problem solving.

DIRECTIONS TO CAMP BROADSTONE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. What type of schedule do I need to work at Camp Broadstone?

    The activities at Camp run from 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. so you will need a free half day to instruct our activities. Work is available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons and Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.

  2. I don't have any experience. Can I still work at camp?

    Yes, we will provide you with the training you will need to instruct our activities. The training comes in the form of the weekend staff trainings and apprenticeships with seasoned staff. What you need to bring to the training is a desire to work with children, a good sense of humor, patience, good judgment, and a willingness to learn.

  3. Do I need First Aid training? And if so where do I get it?

    Yes , you will need current certification in American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Adult CPR. Your CPR training can be from the American Heart Association. First Aid/CPR classes are taught by our local chapter of the American Red Cross and on the Watauga Campus of Caldwell Community College. Please contact the Watauga County Red Cross (828-264-8226) and Caldwell Community College (828-265-5060) for class schedules. Summer Enrichment Program

Preparing for the climb

 

    Camp Broadstone's summer camp program is a residential program for Academically Gifted 4th grade through 9th grade boys and girls. The program is a blend of enrichment classes and adventure activities that are designed to encourage and foster intellectual, social, and physical growth. Campers attend hands-on enrichment classes each morning in areas of science, environmental studies, arts and crafts, music, dramatic arts, and cultural studies. Afternoon adventures activities in canoeing, climbing, on a high ropes course, on an Alpine Tower, hiking, and participation in a group problem solving course place campers in fun, challenging, and stimulating environments that allow campers to learn more about themselves and their relationships with other people.
