...AN AREA OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL AFFECT ALLEGHANY...NORTHWESTERN SURRY...WILKES...WATAUGA AND ASHE COUNTIES IN NORTHWESTERN NORTH CAROLINA...SOUTHERN SMYTH AND GRAYSON COUNTIES IN SOUTHWESTERN VIRGINIA... At 1007 AM EDT, strong thunderstorms were clustered over Maple Springs, or near Deep Gap, moving northeast at 30 mph. Winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with this storm. Locations impacted include... Boone... Galax... Marion... North Wilkesboro... Wilkesboro... Chilhowie... and Sparta. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.

...Heavy Rainfall Expected Monday through Tuesday... .Significant amounts of rainfall are expected to begin across the forecast area today into Tuesday as a result of an approaching cold front, deep tropical moisture, and the outer circulation of Tropical Storm Isaias moving northward along the Florida and Georgia shoreline to eastern Virginia by Tuesday. ...FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM EDT THIS MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING... The Flash Flood Watch continues for * Portions of North Carolina and southwest Virginia, including the following areas, in North Carolina, Alleghany NC, Ashe, Surry, Watauga, and Wilkes. In southwest Virginia, Carroll, Floyd, Grayson, and Patrick. * From 8 AM EDT this morning through Tuesday evening. * Excessive rainfall enhanced by the remnants of Tropical Storm Isaias. * Small creeks and streams could rise into flood quickly today. Flash flooding can be expected in areas of quick heavy rainfall and areas of persistent moderate or heavier rainfall. From 2 to 4 inches of rainfall is expected in the included counties with locally higher amounts possible along the southern Blue Ridge from northwest North Carolina into southwest Virginia.

Western Wilkes County in northwestern North Carolina... * Until 100 PM EDT. * At 1005 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Up to 1 inch of rain has fallen. Some locations that will experience flooding include... Boone, Wilkesboro, Jefferson, West Jefferson, Blowing Rock, Lansing and Deep Gap. Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected over the area. This will result in minor flooding. This includes the following streams and drainages... Beaverdam Creek, Beech Creek and Beaver Creek.
