On Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 9:00am - 1:00pm at Ashe Services for Aging, individuals can take advantage of free, confidential memory screenings. The incidence of Alzheimer's disease is escalating nationwide. It is estimated that as many as 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, and the number is escalating in line with aging baby boomers. Age is the greatest risk factor.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 3:00 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center on November 12th, 2009. Representatives from the REI and Appalachian State University's administration will be there to celebrate this monumental occasion. This event is free and open to the public. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, the REI will be hosting our annual Fall forum in the Plemmons Student Union at 5:00pm. The forum will provide an opportunity to learn more about past and future REI projects as well as how to become involved in this organization.

November 8th 2:00 pm Birds and their Nests Join a park ranger at the US Hwy 221 Access, Visitor Center to learn something about the birds you might see in the park. We will take a short hike to see if we can find any nests, and identify them. Dress appropriately for the outdoors. November 15th 2:00 pm Winter Tree Identification Meet a park ranger at the Wagoner Road Access at 2:00 pm for a short hike to help learn to identify some trees common in our area. Dress appropriately for the outdoors. November 21st 2:00 pm Caution! Whitetail Deer! Join a park ranger to learn about the Whitetail Deer, and look at ways to decrease vehicle/deer accidents. Meet at the US Hwy 221 Access Visitors Center. November 28th 1:00 pm Benefits of Native Grasses Native grasses are the building blocks for a natural ecosystem. Come out to New River State Park and find out which grasses are native, how to propagate them and find out interesting benefits of establishing native grasses including natural bird feed and ornamental gardening. Free sample pack of native grass see to the first 10 participants. Meet at the Visitor Center at the US Hwy 221 Access for a 30 minute slide show and discussion. The Humane Society of Wilkes will hold a Pet Adoption Fair at Hollywood Video, 1902 W US Highway 421, Wilkesboro, on Saturday, November 7th from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm. Dogs, puppies, cats and kittens will be available for adoption. Adoption fees include vet exam, worming, rabies shot and spay or neuter. Pet related items will be for sale. PRESS RELEASE for HIGH COUNTRY BLUE STAR MOTHERS A meeting for military mothers will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at the National Guard Amory at 2:00. Mothers of military sons or daughters serving in any branch of service who live in Watauga, Ashe, or Avery County are invited to attend and be involved in this exciting new group to support our military family members who serve our nation so valiantly and with honor. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the chartering of a High Country Chapter of the National Organization of Blue Star mothers who have sons or daughters serving in the military. The organization organizes activities to support both the families and those serving in the military. Those activities are determined by each group, and include mailing cards, letters, and packages to area service men and women as well as being a support group for mothers who have sons and/or daughters in the military. Attorneys will meet with individuals to help them prepare living wills, health care power of attorney documents and simple wills. Clients must be residents of Watauga County and must be 60 years old or older if single. If married, at least one member of the couple must be 60. “Let’s Hold Hands” is a doll making project developed by Susan Roth, co-author and illustrator of Listen to the Wind: The Story of Dr. Greg and Three Cups of Tea. Come design and decorate a paper doll in your own image! The dolls will be displayed at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and will serve as ambassadors of friendship to children around the world.

Rainbow Center-Children and Family Services-Bridges Foster Care Program. Bridges Foster Care serves children from all over Northwestern North Carolina ages birth to 21. They provide children with a safe and loving family or theraputic foster home. Bridges Foster Parents receive training and support from RCCFS. A quartet of local area music talents, Jeff Little, Wayne Henderson, Steve Lewis and Jerrell Little, are scheduled to perform a toe-tapping medley of fan favorites on Saturday, November 14, 7:30 p.m. at the Ashe County High School auditorium. All proceeds will go to support the Ashe County Free Medical Clinic which provides healthcare for the county’s uninsured residents. An added highlight during intermission is the drawing to determine the winner of the “Laura Nan” hand-knitted ladies sweater currently on display at Spin-a-Yarn Weave-a-Web on the Backstreet in West Jefferson. NAMI Connections Recovery Support Group NAMI Connections recovery support group is for adults with mental illness regardless of their diagnosis. Every group is offered free of charge and meets for 90 minutes. All are led by trained individuals who are also in recovery-people who understand the challenges we face. NAMI Connections groups offer a flexible and casual environment without an educational format, and no registration or enrollment obligation is required.
