Please join us for a discussion of Taoism and its influences on philosophy and health. The class will be loosely structured around readings from the Tao De Ching, and Chuang Tzŭ, or any other material you care to bring. There will also be a Chi Gong or Taiji Ch’aun practice (Cheng Man-ch’ing’s yang short form). As discussions progress topics may include: an introduction to a Taoist view of the seasons, directions, and other Nature forces, and their influence on Chinese medicine. The class is being organized by Joel Packard, a Boone resident, Chinese Medicine student, and practitioner of Taiji Ch’aun.

Hot Cars Harm Boone, NC (July 1, 2008) - Even though it may not get as hot in the High Country as it does off the mountain, the Watauga County Child Fatality Prevention Team and Safe Kids Watauga County stress the importance of never leaving a child in a car - especially on hot days. According to... Heat-related illnesses cause more deaths in the U.S. than hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes combined. To date in 2008, five infants/children have died due to vehicular hyperthermia, including one in Watauga County. Safe Kids Watauga County sponsored a demonstration at EmergencyFest on June 14, 2008 to increase awareness. A "fake" child under age 3 was placed in a car with the windows rolled up and doors shut from 9:30 am until 1:15 pm. At an average of 10 degrees per hour, the thermometer inside the car rose from 77 degrees to 110 degrees during the demonstration; the temperature outside the car was 78 degrees. All drivers should prepare and plan - make sure your child stays hydrated during warm weather days and use air conditioning when available. Be aware of your child's location as well as whether or not they have accessibility to play in cars unattended. Never leave babies sleeping in cars or children alone in a car - not even for a minute.

Art in the Park in Blowing Rock, North Carolina begins its 46th year, on May 17th! This award-winning series features the works of juried artisans from all over the Eastern U.S. in metal, fiber, watercolor and oil painting, wood, photography, basketry, jewelry, clay, glass and more. The Chamber of Commerce provides free shuttles throughout the day.
